On Wednesday, August 14, 2019, the state of New York's Child Victims Act went into effect. This law offers victims of child sexual abuse who had previously been unable to pursue justice against their abusers a one-year waiver of the statute of limitations.
Among those who have abused victims are the Archdiocese of New York, the Boy Scouts of America and the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Statutes of limitations are put in place in order to ensure that victims pursue justice in a reasonable amount of time and to preserve evidence. But child victims face unique problems.
Many are intimidated by or fearful of their abusers, or too ashamed of what has happened to them. Many do not know how to report abuse or understand that what they have endured is illegal. Some do not have access to the authorities who can help them. The New York Child Victims Act offers them an opportunity to get the justice they deserve.
